Some people are not sure what they want to do after high school. Okay, a lot of people don’t. But last Friday, the career fair was here. There are a lot of jobs you may have never considered pursuing and there are careers for anyone.
Some may require more education or more work but they will be worth it in the end.
”Being a veterinarian does take a lot of effort, but I enjoy it and definitely think it’s a very rewarding field.” Dr. Julie Elkins, a veterinarian said.”It takes a lot to be a veterinarian, I went through nine years of college to be qualified for this job. You have to be very attentive and dedicated to what you’re doing. You can’t mess around in this profession since you’re working with people’s beloved animals.”
But animals aren’t the only ones that need to be taken care of. Especially when they need medicine to do that.
“It’s important to be accurate and precise when you’re dealing with prescription medicine.” Said Kandee Bradley, a pharmacist at Marion pharmacy.” You’ve got to deal with math to make sure that you give the right amount of pills and the right amount of mg.” Bradley said.“But overall, I enjoy my job. If people need medicine, we’re there to give it to them, no problem.”
Another career that is a bit different from the two prior, Tony Silver is a funeral director at Kirksey Funeral Home.
“It’s not just a job that involves hosting a funeral,” he said. “ You have to console the family and obtain information to complete legal documents, such as death certificates or burial permits.” You also have to plan with the family and make sure that the funeral looks how they wanted.”
You have to prepare things such as what coffin you want them to have, the floral decorations, the lights and lots of other things that the family would want”
If you want to do something similar to writing the Iliad for McDowell high for example, journalism might be the right career for you.
“Journalism is generally a very rewarding career field.” Landdis Hollifield said. “There are nights where sitting in front of a computer and researching is the last thing that you want to do, but then there are also days when you find a very interesting story, perhaps about a person.”
Hollifield said.” Some days you just have to write what the people want to hear, like the big news going on or the score of a local football game. But creative writers, don’t be put off. Some newspapers put short stories in their newspaper, maybe once a week, but the main part of it is just getting the facts.”
