The kids in the Wee Titan class have been learning Spanish thanks to Mrs. Van der Sluijs’ Spanish for Native Speakers class, which was started around the beginning of the school year. Mrs. Van der Sluijs said that she started it because she wanted a way for hispanic kids to be proud of their heritage and to teach others about it.
One of the students that helps Mrs. Van Sluijs said that he really liked doing it, he likes that he can teach the little kids his langue. He said that the kids seem enthusiastic about it and want to learn. Jorge Queriapa is very glad to have the opportunity.
Mrs. Lanier, the band teacher at Mcdowell high school, has her son Ian in the class and said that she thinks that it is a wonderful idea for the little kids to be learning spanish because their brains at this age can absorb it all. She said that her son is excited and that he loves working with the older kids. Mrs. Lanier said “ I hope that they keep doing it because I’m excited to see how much he learns in the two years.” Ian can already count to ten in spanish and Mrs. Lanier is really excited.
After a call from Mrs. Van der Sluijs to the News 13 staff about the activities going on at McDowell High, News 13 covered the story about the wee titans and about how well they are absorbing the spanish they have been taught so far this year.
