Last week, Supreme Court halted same – sex marriage in Utah after a federal district court has ruled that banning marriage for gay or lesbian couples violates their rights. It is known that peoples’ opinions about this issue vary in a wide range. Especially in a very conservative state like Utah, it is hard to look at the facts and find a reasonable opinion.
The question is: Why are so many people opposed to gay marriage? The answers are easy to find but hard to understand for people who have nothing against it. One of the reasons seems to be that personal beliefs prohibit gay marriage.
Especially certain religions often argue that same – sex marriage is not in the mind of God or whoever they are praying to. If people want to believe that, they can. Everyone has the right to believe what he wants but nobody has the right to tell other persons what to believe. This does not match with the actions of churches who try to convince other people that their beliefs are the right ones, but this is another issue.
Who gives someone the right to judge another person’s sexuality? Nobody does, but many people are judging. Arguing that gays or lesbians can just change their sexuality or that homosexuality is a disease is unbelievable. However, several groups of people seem to be serious about those points. There is a good hint for those people: They could change their sexuality, maybe for a couple of weeks, because it is, according to them, so easy. Maybe after that time they start thinking and realize that homosexuality is neither a choice nor a disease.
The latest news from Utah is only a symbol for this country and the world. We think we live in a world with freedom and justice for all, but we do not. The discussion about gay marriage is only one of many issues proving this. What does one person have to worry about when a woman marries another woman? Not a single thing. Some people are gay. Get over it.
