When a person first walks into Crooked Door on a Saturday night, they are greeted by the old wooden staircase that cricks with every step leading to the lobby and coffee shop. The aroma in the air is filled with the sweet scent of freshly brewed house coffee, and there is a quiet chatter coming from the array of people about to participate in the Open Mic Night. The group of people attending varies from teenagers to people who are gracefully aged, but they are all intermingling as if their ages do not exist. Around seven o’clock, everyone takes a seat in one of the rows of fold out chairs, and the first act goes up. A young girl with a timid smile walks to the front of the room, and out of her comes a powerful voice. Later on in the night, a women walks to the front of the room and reminisces about her uncle singing about baked sweet potatoes when she was younger. She started singing the melody in Japanese just as she recalled it.

Later on in the night, owner of Crooked Door Coffee Shop, Rachel Withrow, said that she created these Open Mic Nights because “Wednesday Night Jams were becoming more and more popular, but she wanted to do something where anyone could do what they wanted.” Open Mic Nights have become a recent tradition for Crooked Door within the past few months. Whether a person is there to enjoy the performances or the coffee, Crooked Door Coffee Shop is the place to be on a Saturday night.
