McDowell High has many extracurricular activities to choose from, Environmental Club being one of them. This club, run by Mrs. Rebecca Rideout, is an extra credit opportunity for students in AP Environmental and an adventure waiting to happen. The club participates in county clean ups and tree identification programs on the greenway, but the trips are a favorite among most members.

Already this year, several members of the club went to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park to see the the reintroduced elk. The elk were close enough to touch, and students got the wonderful experience of hearing the male, or bull elks, bugle to attract females and assert their dominance. Readers can go to Mrs. Rideout’s webpage to hear what an elk bugle sounds like.

On March 15, Environmental Club is going on another excursion. They are meeting at 10:30 a.m. of and hike to Cataba Falls near Old Fort. If anyone in Environmental Club missed the memo, go to Mrs. Rideout’s room after school to pick up the permission slip and receive more information.
