Violence is a consistent thing in life. It moves like a plague throughout the world. And it never changes. Recently, an uproar has begun in schools. And a question of immense controversy has arisen. Should we arm teachers in school? In Mrs. Bleier’s English 3 class, students had a debate on this controversial topic. The intense debate featured a podium battle against two students at a time firing off facts and counter arguments. At the end of the debate, the points were scored and each group claimed a winner. The battle of opinions and facts was a heated rapid fire of rich statistics and biased facts.
“We made note cards and wrote down some bulleted information, and one person started with a point, and we were timed. Then the other person counters your point and they gave one.” said Caleb Thomason.
At the end of the debate, the score was tallied and, ultimately, those who were for arming teachers won.
“It was a really fun thing to do; we were all really fired up and in each others faces, but it was fun and we had a blast yelling at each other and crushing each others’ ideas.” said Landree Cooper, who argued against arming teachers.
The arming teachers proposal remains controversial. However, violence in schools and as a whole keeps happening, and options are limited.
