According to the Assistant Principal at McDowell High School, Rodney Wheeler, the new traffic pattern will help in more ways than one. Coming from West McDowell Junior High, the left lane is for turning left toward Bojangles, and the right lane is for turning into the student parking lot. Exiting the student drop off and pick up area, the left lane is for turning toward West McDowell Junior High. Drivers can turn right into the student drop-off and pickup area at any time, but there is no left turn between the hours of 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and then 2:30 to 3:30 pm. The pattern from Bojangles to the high school has not changed.
The reason for the new traffic pattern is to accommodate bringing the 6th grade population to the middle schools and the 9th grade to the high school next year, Wheeler said.
The additional lane allows for a decrease in congestion so that commuters can have quick access, and quick entry and exit, to the school premises.
All that is needed to know now is to follow the signs that are on the pavement and posted on the sides of the road. Do not use this as an incentive to have parents/guardians to use the bus drop off area.
